Michael Phelps, the most excellent swimmer of all time, just lost his father. On Monday, Phelps broke the heartbreaking news that his father, Fred Phelps, had passed away. 

He published a message in his honor on Instagram. There were several hidden photos, in addition to the one with his father. 

Fred and his grandson Boomer Phelps were shown in the picture.

Phelps wrote in the caption of a photo on Instagram, ‘You’ll always be my dad and I’ll always be your son. I love you and will miss you, dad, RIP, He included some private images of his father adoring his sons.’

It was one of the infrequent occasions when Phelps talked about his father in a heartfelt way. 

Everyone’s attention was captured by the precious photos of Fred holding his grandchildren, and they afterward showed their appreciation for him.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Phelps II, the 23-time Olympic gold champion, also included several photos of his father, a retired Maryland State Trooper. He spent 11 years operating on a tactical assault unit.

In a heartfelt social media statement, Olympic swimming legend Michael Phelps said goodbye to his father, who passed away on Monday.

Michael Fred Phelps Sr.’s death was reported without a cause of death or age. According to some sources, he was 71 years old at the time of his death.

Several well-known celebrities, including fellow Olympian Lindsey Vonn, commented on the post. ‘I’m sorry for your loss, the skier wrote. He is and always will be.’

‘So sorry for your loss, The Raven’s family is sending all the love and prayers for you,’ the Baltimore Ravens wrote.

Relationship Between Fred and Michael

After his parents divorced in 1994, the renowned American swimmer and his father had a tense relationship.

Phelps’ therapist is said to have urged him to see his father when he had a mental health crisis.

Most of Michael Phelps’ supporters are aware of his therapy sessions on hard days. He created a strong bond with his father and enhanced his mental health thanks to therapy.

One Phelps talked of his therapist telling him to call his father at home.

He remarked, ‘I was like, why? When my therapist suggested inviting him for the family weekend. He’ll only give me another disappointment in my life, and I don’t want that.’

But the two got back in touch after Michael’s drunk driving arrest in 2014, and subsequent rehab stay.

Michael told SI that their connection was ‘very terrific and that it grew. We’ve discovered how much we have in common.’
